Context

The problem

Bym is a shared-ride app for the staff of a factory. A colleague who drives to work takes the colleagues who live along the way, and a trip is registered once for the days it repeats. Riders board with a code, drivers see their passengers on a map, and a web dashboard gives the company the totals. The app is live on Cafe Bazaar.

What was broken

Factories carry their staff to work in company buses. The aim of Bym was to remove the bus service, or at least cut the number of buses, by having colleagues bring each other to the company in shared rides.

Solution

What I designed

  • One home screen for both roles: a switch between driver and passenger, then three actions (register a trip, trips, my vehicle details).
  • Trip registration in one screen: go and return, go only or return only; arrival and return times; the days the trip repeats; and a card per leg with its start, destination and time.
  • A clear waiting state after a request is sent: it explains that confirmation depends on the driver choosing the trip, offers the list of trips, and promises a message once the driver accepts.
  • A map of the trip with every passenger's pickup point and the car, a call button beside each passenger's name, the start address, arrival time and cost, with navigation and end-of-trip within reach.
  • Boarding by code: the rider shows a QR code that refreshes every few seconds and the driver scans it, so a trip counts only when the rider is actually in the car.
  • A company dashboard with the number of trips and active users, the average over the last 30 days, the month's trip cost, trips per week, month and year, and the registered against completed trips for today and tomorrow.

Impact

Results

  • Registering a repeating trip, collecting passengers and confirming boarding each take one screen.
  • The company sees usage and cost in one dashboard instead of in a spreadsheet.
